Dharna.org`s History
Spurred by the amazing victory of the lawyers, politicians and civil society of Pakistan through their decisive and coordinated movement for the restoration of the Chief Justice, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, (sacked on November 03, 2007 by General Pervez Musharraf, the former army chief and President of Pakistan ) and thus the popular demand for the restoration of an independent judiciary magnanimously conceded by the sitting PPP Government on March 15, 2009, www.dharna.org came into being.
Dharna (Sit-in) generally refers to fixing one's mind on an object. It refers to whole-heartedly pledging toward an outcome or to inculcating a directed attitude. Dharna is consciously and diligently holding a point of view with the intent of achieving a goal.

The Freedom and Responsibilities of Media
"The `freedom of communication` is enshrined in the constitution with "rights" to inform the public without jeopardizing the security of the citizens and the integrity of the State and Property. However, freedom of "rights" must be in consonance with its "duties and responsibilities". "Rights" and "Responsibilities" are karmically inseparable.
The role as well as the responsibility of the media is to provide authentic information that would be beneficial to all....... More

Who is accountable for the lives that went down the drains? Courtesy: The News.
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is turning a blind eye to dozens of lidless manholes posing threat to residents that may lead to fatal incident.
The CDA, being a rich development body is apathetic to civic issues and spends maximum share of its development budget for the beautification of posh sectors housing the elite class.
The authority is unable to expand infrastructure in accordance with expansion of city and population that is why it violates the master plan to find easy solutions to these issues. Different markets including Blue Area, the commercial hub of the capital, markets and residential areas of sectors G-8, G-9, G- 10, I-9 and I-10 are suffering utmost difficulties due to open manholes posing threat to human life.
To some extent, the residents are also responsible in this regard, who start using lidless manholes as dustbins blocking sewerage....... More

Power shortage in Pakistan Courtesy: Genex Business Solutions
Pakistan is facing serious electricity shortage. After the assassination of Benazir Bhutto (former Pakistani Prime Minister & leader of main opposition party), riots began in different parts of Pakistan, resulting in damage to several power stations throughout the country. Pakistan who was already facing power crises is now having shortage of almost 10 hours a day across Pakistan. In some cities the shortage time is even more than 10 hours.
This is surely not a good sign, and very frustrating for everyone. We have arranged power backup systems and trying to stay alive all the time. This situation may result in slow progress to upcoming projects.
The Government of Pakistan has promised to fix this situation, however there are no chances for it to be fixed in near future. We urge everyone to stay strong in this difficult....... More
The Ghost Schools of Pakistan Courtesy:Sarah Stuteville — Special to GlobalPost.
Significant funding — much of it US money — goes toward non-existent education provided by non-existent schools.
KARACHI — Despite ankle deep garbage, charcoal-scribbled graffiti of machine guns and the scorched remains of squatters’ fires, the dusty green chalkboard still reads “December 2, 2006,” the last day that classes were held in the primary school wing of Mirza Adam Khan, a government-run compound of schools in the poor and violence plagued Karachi neighborhood of Lyari.
This is just one of as many as an estimated 30,000 “ghost schools” — nonfunctioning schools that continue to exist only on paper — throughout Pakistan. Recent government reports suggest almost 7,000 such schools exist throughout the southern Pakistani province of Sindh, many of them in the megacity of Karachi.
“A ghost school might be a school which is not there, it never....... More
The plight of newborn in Pakistan Courtesy Economic Review provided by Find Articles at BNET.
Of every thousand children born in Pakistan, nearly a 100 will not live to see their first birthday. Of these 60 will die within the first month of life, the majority with in the first few days of birth. If one adds the enormous number of stillborn infants and maternal deaths to this list, it exposes the deplorable state of health care delivery in Pakistan.
For a country about to join the nuclear club, it is inexcusable to have a startling 2 million perinatal (at the time of the birth) deaths annually. Histrionics aside, this early newborn mortality is a matter of utmost importance for health planners, as all population planning exercises are doomed to failure in the wake of the aforementioned statistics. In a country where children and family offer the only social....... More

On one hand vehicles are increasing exponentially while roads are getting blocked due to the mega-development drive of the City District Government of Karachi (CDGK). Demoralized Health-Care in Pakistan Courtesy: Wikipedia.
Pakistan's health indicators, health funding, and health and sanitation infrastructure are generally poor, particularly in rural areas. About 19 percent of the population is malnourished—a higher rate than the 17 percent average for developing countries—and 30 percent of children under age five are malnourished. Leading causes of sickness and death include gastroenteritis, respiratory infections, congenital abnormalities, tuberculosis, malaria, and typhoid fever. The United Nations estimates that in 2003 Pakistan's human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevalence rate was 0.1 percent among those 15–49, with an estimated 4,900 deaths from acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Hepatitis B and C are also rampant with approximately 3 million cases of each in the country at the moment.
According to official data, there are 127,859 doctors and 12,804 health facilities in the country to cater for over 170 million people In 2007 there were 85 physicians for....... More
