What Are Dharnas?

Dharnas are devotional verses or lines of poetry that can be composed by anyone. They are not part of Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Most of the dharnas featured on this website were written by Baba Ji. Some were written by members of the sangat and shared with Baba Ji, who chose to sing them during Khajana Darshan.

Dharnas are not merely songs or poetry. Many arose from lived spiritual experiences and are shared in the hope that they may help others on their own spiritual journey.

Written in simple, easy-to-understand language and filled with emotion, dharnas are meant to touch the heart, awaken love for God, and inspire spiritual longing within us.

The mind is often restless and scattered, constantly wandering elsewhere while the body remains in one place. Dharnas help bring us home—to where our body is. As the mind returns to the place where the body already is, we naturally become peaceful

Why Do We Sing Dharnas?

Singing is much more than music. It is a spiritual practice.

Most of us spend our lives lost in thoughts, worries, memories, and plans. Through singing, we gradually move from the mind to the heart. As we become centered at the place where our body is, a natural sense of peace begins to emerge.

This singing is different from worldly singing. It is not about performance, technique, or seeking appreciation from others. Its purpose is not to impress anyone, but to help us forget ourselves and become absorbed in love for the Divine.

When singing is filled with love, humility, gratitude, wonder, or the pain of separation from the Beloved, it becomes a powerful aid on the spiritual path.

Singing as a Spiritual Path

IMG_8165_edited.jpg

For many people, singing is a form of entertainment, self-expression, or performance. In Baba Ji's teachings, however, singing has a much deeper significance. It is a spiritual practice and a powerful means of transformation.

Most of us spend our lives lost in thought. The mind wanders endlessly between memories of the past, worries about the future, and countless distractions. Rarely is the mind where the body is. We eat while thinking about something else. We walk while thinking about something else. We sit in one place while our consciousness travels elsewhere.

Singing helps bring us home.

As we sing with awareness, the wandering mind gradually returns to where the body already is. We become centered, present, and grounded. The scattered attention that was lost in thought begins to gather itself.

Peace is not created through singing; rather, singing helps us return to the place where peace has always been.

A Living Tradition

Some dharnas draw inspiration from traditional Punjabi folk songs. While these songs often expressed worldly love, they were rooted in a love that was pure, sincere, and filled with longing. In dharnas, this love is spiritualized and directed towards the Guru or God.

Today, dharnas continue to be sung as a living tradition. Through simple words, heartfelt singing, and deep reflection, they help seekers cultivate love, longing, and a closer relationship with the Divine.
